Have you ever seen evergreen content? We bet you have. The real question is, can you identify it, create it, and use it to boost business or website traffic?

To put it simply, evergreen content is not time-sensitive, stays relevant, and continually drives traffic for a long time after posting. Most things in life aren’t simple though, are they? So get your shovels out and get ready for the back pain because we’re digging a little deeper. Just kidding, our blog won’t directly cause you back pain. (We hope)

What Exactly Is Evergreen Content?

It’s search engine optimized content that stays relevant and useful over time. You might think that most content is evergreen, It’s not like your blog posts just disappear one day, right? That is true, but an article about an event, for example, does not stay relevant. Evergreen content is different. To get a better idea, let’s take a look at some examples:

Of course, the content will need to be relevant to your business, but we’re starting to hone in on what makes evergreen content evergreen. Another great way to understand evergreen content is to look at what is NOT evergreen content.

What’s NOT Evergreen?

Anything that revolves around a specific event or period of time is generally not evergreen. It is only relevant for a limited time. For example:

  • News

  • Current Trends

  • Time-based statistics

Evergreen content has no expiration date. It solves problems and answers questions that people will still have five years from now. Going back to our earlier example, new parents in five years will still want to be sure their home is baby-proofed when their little one is born. They will not, however, be concerned with interior design trends of 2020. The evergreen picture should be coming into focus, even if you wear glasses.

Don’t Set It & Forget It

Why not? It’ll be useful forever, right? Yes, hopefully, it will. But you still need to promote and highlight it to be sure it gets seen in the first place. An occasional social media post, link in a newsletter, or sidebar on your website are great places to start. When people visit your blog page, show them a ‘featured articles’ or ‘most popular articles” section with your evergreen content in it. Repost the evergreen articles with updates. There are a lot of strategies you can use to make sure your evergreen content is consumed when you post it and in the future.
