Spooktacular Marketing: Halloween-Themed Ideas for Small Businesses

About the Author: Tricia Allenson

Halloween is creeping up on us faster than a ghost in the night, and for small businesses, it’s a scary good opportunity to have some fun with marketing strategies. As the leaves turn shades of orange and black, it’s time to brew up some wickedly clever Halloween-themed marketing ideas that will make your business stand out like a jack-o’-lantern on a dark October night. Too much? Oh, we’re just getting started, baby.

“Boo”-tiful Decorations and Displays

Transform your storefront or website into a haunted wonderland. Dress up your physical location with spooky decorations and eerie lighting. We wouldn’t advise that you hire a zombie to wander around your store, but if you’ve got one handy, by all means! Online, create a Halloween-themed banner or background for your website and incorporate some seasonal graphics into your social media posts. Don’t be afraid to go all out with cobwebs, pumpkins, and skeletons! If you send out weekly or monthly newsletters, make sure to spook-ify those as well!

Halloween-Themed Promotions:

Treat your customers to some fang-tastic deals! Watch them bite (get it?) on discounts or special promotions for Halloween-themed products or services. For instance, a bakery could sell “Boo-tifully Delicious” cupcakes or a salon could offer “Witchy Makeover” packages. You might need to get a little creative depending on what industry you’re in, but it’s worth consideration.

Spooky Storytelling:

Craft engaging and spine-tingling Halloween stories related to your products or services. Share them on your blog, social media, or in a newsletter. Make sure to include some hair-raising twists and turns, and don’t forget to end with a call to action. For example, a car repair shop could write a story about a haunted vehicle that only finds peace after receiving their services. An HVAC shop could write about the ghost in the vents who would only be freed by the cool air of a new air conditioner. And a donut shop could talk about a terrifyingly horrible word without donuts! Gasp!

Pumpkin Carving Contest:

Organize a pumpkin carving contest and invite your customers to participate. Ask them to carve pumpkins with your logo or products in mind. Share the entries on social media and let your followers vote for their favorites. The winning pumpkin could earn a special prize or discount. This is a great strategy to increase engagement on social media. Just make sure the prize is worth the effort of carving an incredible pumpkin! If our donut shop above offered free donuts for a year… hold on a minute. We have to go carve a pumpkin.

Halloween Giveback:

Show your community spirit by organizing a charity drive or fundraiser with a Halloween twist. For every purchase during a certain period, you could donate a percentage to a local charity or run a canned food drive with a spooky slogan like, “Scare Away Hunger.” “Boo-tique For Those In Need” could be a clothing drive. How about “Frighteningly Fresh Water Drive?” We could go all day… but we won’t. Anyway, people love businesses that share the wealth and contribute to the local community. This is a great way to turn first-time customers into lifelong ones.

Halloween offers a witch’s cauldron of creative opportunities for small businesses to engage with their audience and boost their marketing efforts. So, embrace the eerie, the creepy, and the fun of this spooktacular season. Use some of these ideas or come up with your own and watch customers gravitate towards your business like zombies to fresh brains! Or us toward that donut shop… okay, enough about the freakin’ donuts. Happy Haunting!
