4 Marketing Mistakes You Would Never Do

About the Author: Tricia Allenson

Hey there, marketing geniuses and novices! Here at Limelight Marketing Systems, have a knack for giving out (perfect) advice. And today, we’re here to talk about some of the top marketing mistakes you should avoid. (Like the dentist. Just kidding, see your dentist regularly!)

We’ve all seen some marketing fails that are so bad, they literally hurt to see. But fear not, my friends, for we’re here to help you avoid these blunders and show off your awesome brand the right way.

Mistake #1: Not knowing your audience

Listen up, folks. Your audience isn’t just a group of faceless bodies (creepy) that you can throw any old marketing message at and be successful. They’re real people with wants, needs, and desires. If you don’t know what those are, you’re asking for trouble.

We once saw a marketing campaign that was clearly aimed at teenagers, but it featured a bunch of middle-aged men trying to look hip and young. Needless to say, it missed the mark. You would never do that, right? We know you wouldn’t.

Mistake #2: Trying to be too trendy

Ah, trends. They come and go like the wind, and if you’re not careful, you’ll get blown away with them. Aren’t we clever!? Sure, it’s important to stay up-to-date with the latest fads, but don’t let them dictate your entire marketing strategy.

A couple of years ago, we saw a company that tried to jump on the “dabbing” trend (you know, that weird dance move where you tuck your face into your elbow). They plastered it all over their ads and social media, but it just came off as awkward and off brand.

Someone help us, what’s 2023’s version of the dab? Whatever it is, be careful about using it in your marketing strategy. It might go out of style next week.

Mistake #3: Ignoring your brand identity

Your brand identity is like your company’s personality. It’s what sets you apart from the competition and makes you memorable. So why on earth would you ignore it? That would be like ignoring someone offering you free tacos. Preposterous.

We’ve seen many companies that completely changed their branding to appeal to a younger audience, but they didn’t consider whether it fit with their existing customers. They lose a lot of loyal customers and hardly gain any new ones.

This brings us to the “new” soda Starry. Have you heard about this? It’s just Sierra Mist rebranded. Was this a good move by this brand? We’ll find out soon. Keep your finger on the pulse of your brand and be cautious about rebrands. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

Mistake #4: Not testing your marketing campaigns

Last but not least, we have the mistake of not testing your marketing campaigns. This is a biggie, folks. Would you buy a car without a test drive? Would you buy a house without seeing it? So don’t spend your hard-earned dollars on a marketing campaign without testing it!

We recently saw a company that spent a ton of money on a billboard ad, only to realize too late that the design was too small to be seen from the road. Ouch. Don’t let that be you. We don’t love that for you.

So, there you have it! 4 big marketing mistakes to avoid. Hopefully, you’ve learned a thing or two that you can utilize for your business. Remember, marketing doesn’t have to be all serious business. Sometimes, a little humor can go a long way.
